Pet CBD 101: How does it work?
What Is CBD?
Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a natural compound that’s derived from cannabis plants. The non-intoxicating compound that’s been shown in clinical settings by researchers and medical professionals to potentially have a large encompassing scope of therapeutic benefits. Its continued research is being conducted globally with new breakthroughs emerging every year.
Why CBD for Pets?
While CBD is most popularly used in the health and wellness space for people, scientific and anecdotal reports are exhibiting the same scope of therapeutic potential for our beloved pets.
Supported By Clinical Science
Dr. Stephanie McGrath, an Associate Professor at the Neurology Veterinary Teaching Hospital at CSU, has been at the forefront of pet CBD research, producing trials specifically on canine treatment. She has pioneered and published 15 canine studies on various conditions with the majority of the research focused on cannabinoid therapy. The veterinary neurologist initiated her first CBD pilot study in 2016 in order to assess CBD for dogs with epilepsy. After the success of her first study, Dr. McGrath has continued her work with cannabinoids beyond epilepsy, investigating other applications and therapeutic potential. We look forward to seeing more breakthrough scientific data produced by Dr. McGrath and other researchers in this field in the coming years.
CBD and the Endocannabinoid System
The endocannabinoid system is the largest receptor system and master regulator network in humans and animals. The network is accountable for regulating physiological functions including appetite, mood, sleep, pain, fertility, and more. Fundamentally, the endocannabinoid system produces endocannabinoids that work as agonists and antagonists with corresponding cannabinoid receptors that are located throughout the body. The purpose is to nudge these systems towards homeostasis. Since CBD acts on these same biological pathways, it causes the same harmonious reaction. That’s why pet CBD has such a versatile potential therapeutic application.
Cannabinoid Therapy for Pets
Broad-spectrum hemp oil offers a non-intoxicating option that’s ideal for our fur babies. Just like people, some pets can be highly sensitive to THC even at the minimum legal threshold of 0.3% or less. That’s why all of our products contain THC-free broad-spectrum hemp oil to minimize any potential concerns or sensitivities. Broad-spectrum hemp oil contains all of the other naturally-occurring cannabinoids and terpenes found in hemp, delivering the benefit of the entourage effect without the possible psychoactive side effects. The entourage effect is believed to provide the maximum potential of medicinal and therapeutic properties.
The Safe, Natural Alternative
We can’t make any conclusive medical statements about pet CBD just yet but the research available on CBD safety is solid and compelling. Science supports CBD’s safety among animals and humans with no risk of overdose or dependence. Large amounts of CBD remain non-toxic and there are no known long-term, adverse risks.
