CBD Pet Dosing Guide 101
The basics of starting out with CBD for your pet
Just like with humans, when it comes to CBD for your furry friend, there is no one-size-fits-all dosage. You must figure out what works best for your specific pet, and that means doing a little experimenting.
The three steps to determining the ideal CBD dosage for your dog or cat are:
1. Start with low daily dosage
When you first begin treatment, we recommend that you start with a dosage that is half (or even less) of the recommended dose on the packet.
2. Observe your pet’s reaction
Stick to a low dose schedule for a few days and observe your pet’s behavior. Once you feel confident that your pet is handling it okay, you may consider increasing the dosage. If you notice that your pet is feeling better at the initial dose, then there's no need to up the dosage.
3. Slowly increase the dosage
If your pet has a condition, you may need to give them higher and more frequent doses. In that case, gradually increase the recommended dosage until you achieve the desired results. As always, we would recommend discussing this further with your trusted medical professional and vet, especially if they have existing ailments and/or are on any medication.
How Much CBD Oil Should I Give My Dog?
Here's the scoop on CBD oil dosing for dogs - a gradual approach helps your furry friend's body get used to the active ingredients in any CBD oil.
Starting with the maximum dose right off the bat can actually make your pup feel even worse, as they just won’t know what hit them. Instead, start with a low dose and work your way up. Trust us, it'll make it more effective in the long run. Make sure you follow the recommendations on the product’s packaging for your dog's age and even then, half it to start.
After the first three days, if you feel confident your dog is tolerating the treatment well, increase the dosage to the recommended amount. It might seem like a slow approach, but it's worth it for better results. Now, some pups might be good with just the starting dose, while others might need more depending on their health issues, weight, and age. If you've increased the dose and still aren't seeing results, it's safe to bump it up by 0.25 millilitres per day.
Because dogs come in all shapes and sizes, we have three different CBD oils:
Rover's Canine Broad Spectrum Hemp Oil (Contains 120MG CBD) 1oz Tincture
Rover's Canine Broad Spectrum Hemp Oil (Contains 240MG CBD) 2oz Tincture
The first two have the same CBD contents per oz, so you can follow the same instructions: 1/2 dropper (0.50 mL) per 10 lbs of animal weight per day.
Example amount: A 30 lb dog would need 1-1/2 dropper (1.50 mL) per day.
Rover's Canine Broad Spectrum Hemp Oil (Contains 800MG CBD) 2oz Tincture
This 800MG tincture is suitable for larger breeds as you only need 1/2 dropper (0.50 mL) per 35 lbs of animal weight per day.
Example amount: A 70 lb dog would need 1 dropper (1 mL) per day.
Now what about cats?
If you're thinking about giving your feline friend some CBD oil, it’s important to understand that cats are different species, and require specific dosing instructions that may be different to dogs.
For example, a 10-pound chihuahua and a 10-pound tabby cat might need the same starting dose, but cats generally need lower doses and less cannabidiol to feel the effects. That's why our Whisker's Feline Broad Spectrum Hemp Oil contains only 120MG CBD.
Just like with dogs, the recommended dose for cats is based on their age and weight. The older they are, the lower the dose they should get.
We recommend 1/2 dropper (0.50 mL) per 10 lbs of animal weight per day to be administered orally during or after mealtime. If you struggle to get your cat to cooperate with taking the CBD oil, you can try making our DIY CBD Cat Treats recipe.
Remember, it's always better to start low and work your way up to find the perfect dose for your furry friend.
In a nutshell, when it comes to CBD dosing for your pet, remember that there's no one-size-fits-all approach. With patience and persistence, you'll be able to help your pet experience the many potential benefits of CBD for long-term health.
